Histological evaluation of the effect of low-level laser on distraction osteogenesis in rabbit mandibles
2009
Objectives: This study evaluated the action of low level laser therapy (LLLT) on the percentage of newly formed bone in rabbit mandibles that underwent distraction osteogenesis (DO). Study design: Ten rabbits underwent bone lengthening according to the following protocol: Latency ? 3 days; Activation ? 7 days 0.7 mm/d; and Consolidation ? 10 days. The control group was composed of 4 rabbits. The experimental group, composed of 6 rabbits, received infrared GaAlAs LLLT (?=830 nm, P=40 mW) according to the following protocol: point dose of 10 J/cm2 applied directly on the bone site that underwent DO during bone consolidation at 48-hour intervals. Results: The percentage of newly formed bone wa…
The incidence of severe oral mucositis and its occurrence sites in pediatric oncologic patients
2020
Background Childhood cancer is one of the main causes of child mortality and its treatment has debilitating effects on the oral cavity. Several oral mucositis (SOM) is one of the most common and may cause undesirable symptoms such as pain and risk of systemic infection. Material and Methods This was a longitudinal, retrospective, and observational study determining the incidence of severe oral mucositis (SOM) and its occurrence sites in pediatric oncologic patients, in João Pessoa, Brazil, between 2013 and 2018. Data from 56 patients aged 1 to 18 years were collected from their medical records and through an oral mucosa examination, from the 1st to 5th week of chemotherapy treatment (CT) us…
The Giessen-Mainz-Frankfurt procedure: a new method for complex pelvic reconstruction for bladder exstrophy.
2001
In bladder exstrophy primary reconstruction remains the gold standard worldwide. Despite various types of osteotomies the permanent correction of pubic diastasis remains a challenge. In maxillofacial surgery callus distraction is a routine treatment for hypoplastic mandibles. Originally described by Ilizarov, this method provides stable and true bone lengthening after gradual distraction of an osteotomy site as long as the periosteum remains intact. In cooperation with the departments of maxillofacial surgery and orthopedics we used this technique to correct pubic diastasis and facilitate phallic reconstruction in a 4 1/2-year-old boy with bladder exstrophy who had previously undergone cont…
Effect of intramedullary gradual elongation of the shorter limb on gait patterns
2003
Background: Seven young patients were followed 52 weeks after intramedullary lengthening for limb length discrepancy (LLD). The mean LLD before surgery was 3.0 ± 1.1 cm and 1 year after surgery at the time of the nail-removal it was 0.3 ± 0.3 cm. Methods: The plantar pressures and the ground reaction forces (GRF) were recorded simultaneously with electromyographic (EMG) activities at normal and fast walking speeds. Results: Bilateral comparison indicated that the uncorrected LLD resulted in asymmetrical gait patterns. The peak pressures were higher in the lateral heel and in the medial forefoot in the longer limb as compared to the shorter limb at normal walking speed. At fast walking speed…
